Mrs. Zsuzsanna Jakab has been nominated as Director of ECDC

The Management Board of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has nominated Mrs. Zsuzsanna Jakab (Secretary of State at Hungary's Ministry of Health 2003-2004) as Director of the Institute. The nominee will have a hearing with the European Parliament?s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee at the beginning of 2005, after which the appointment will be confirmed.

The ENVI Committee held the hearing with Mrs. Zsuzsanna Jakab at the meeting of 10 January 2005 in Strasbourg. The Committee will be writing to the President of the European Parliament with the committee's views on her candidature, and then the President transmits the final views of the Parliament to the Chairman of the ECDC Management Board.

54th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe

The fifty-fourth session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe will take place on 6-9 September 2004 in Copenhagen. The delegation of the Hungarian Health Government - lead by Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, Secretary of State - participates in the session.

This year, as main policy and technical items, the Regional Committee will discuss the European strategy for noncommunicable diseases; the outcome and follow-up of the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health; the Regional Office's strategy for geographically dispersed offices; and the proposed programme budget for 2006-2007.

The Regional Committee will also review the status of the process for updating the European health for all policy framework, and the implementation of the Regional Office's country strategy. (More)

 


Fourth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health Budapest, Hungary, 23-25 June 2004

The effects of a degraded environment on children's health raise increasing concern. Every year, unhealthy environments cause the death of more than 5 million children worldwide.

The Budapest Conference is the European response to this situation. WHO/Europe has taken the lead in the action for children and has focused the Conference on "The future for our children".

WHO/EURO, the Ministry of Health, Social and Family Affairs and the Ministry of Environment and Water organized the Ministerial Conference jointly. (More>>>)
